In 1972, Dr. Wen, a Hong Kong neurosurgeon accidentally discovered a very beneficial five point acupunture treatment in the ear. Dr. Wen was testing points in the ear to be used as anesthetic. The Chinese have used accupuncture successfully for thousands of years to prevent many conditions. Dr. Wens voluntary research subjects were all opium addicts. While testing the subjects he found that certain acupuncture points in the ear helped reduce opium cravings and significantly reduced withdrawl symptoms. This was a wonderful breakthrough for addiction treatment and caught the attention of Dr. Smith at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, New York. Dr. Smith went to China to study with Dr. Wen and brought the protocol back to the U.S.

The ear points involved encompass several key organs and mental/emotional states. In Chinese medicine organs are connected not only to physical states but mental/emotional points of wellness vs. imbalance also. The ears are considered to promote healing at a very deep level. This is because they are satellites to the whole body since birth.

This five point protocol not only helps with addictions by reducing cravings, sweats, nervousness, irritability and insomnia, it also stimulates the body to heal and balance itself. The Lung point builds the immune system, assists in cleansing the body of toxins and resolving grief and mood swings. The Shen-Men or Spirit Gate point produces an overall sense of well-being and relaxation. It also stimulates the release of endorphins and other necessary balancing chemicals. The Liver and Kidney points are primary filters for cleansing and healing anger and trauma. They also assist in overall balancing of the body, mind and spirit. The Automatic point calms the nervous system and turns off unneeded fight/flight responses. This aids in the reduction of anxiety, panic attacks and ADHD symptoms. This point also improves focus and energy.

Acupuncture always works towards balance so it does not interfere with other treatments. All acupuncture has a cumulative effect so a series of treatments is usually to obtain balance. Later people often come for tune-ups when they are feeling stressed. It is an effective preventative maintenance for the high stress lifestyle so many lead. We know stress is a huge contributor to disease and imbalance.

As an Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist, I am certified to offer this five needle protocol. The needles are hair thin and there is no pain during treatment. All needles come in a sterile pack and are disposed of after each use. The client relaxes in a recliner for 45 minutes and often falls asleep. An herbal tea developed by Dr. Smith is offered along with healing music and aromatherapy.

The best way to understand Acupuncture is to experience it for yourself. It's true what they say, experience is the best teacher.
